Part of a highway in Daly City, California will be renamed the Alice Peña Bulos Memorial Highway in honor of the Godmother of Filipino-American politics.
Alice Bulos, who passed away on October 21, 2016, is a Filipina activist who spent 40 years in the United States empowering Filipino and other Asian minorities.
The California legislature gave its final approval to resolution ACR 165 authored by Assemblyman Phil Ting that designates the Daly City stretch of State Route 35 as the Alice Peña Bulos Memorial Highway.
“We see the influence of Alice Peña Bulos throughout our communities, as well as in elected local and state government leadership. That’s why she’s considered the Godmother of Filipino American politics and empowerment. It’s my honor to carry the legislation that celebrates her legacy,” Assemblymember Ting said on August 28, 2020.
Alice Bulos received both her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in social and behavioral sciences from the University of Santo Tomas in the City of Manila, Philippines before moving to Sacramento, California in 1977.
Bulos served as “Chair of the Filipino American Caucus, Charter President of the Fil-Am Democratic Club in San Mateo County, the Regional Chair of the National Filipino American Women’s Network, as a Board member of the National Asian/Pacific Democratic Council, on the Board of the Community Initiative on Multiculturalism and the Northern California Disaster Preparedness Network, and as a Board Member of the San Mateo County Chapters of the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association and the American Red Cross.”
Assemblymember Phil Ting’s statement shared that Bulos was appointed by President Bill Clinton to the National Council on Aging in the 1990s, becoming the first Filipino-American selected by a sitting president to serve on a federal post.
The highway signs in memory of Alice Bulos are expected to be installed next year.
Filipino-American History Month this October celebrates Fil-Am activism. A virtual Filipino festival is also being held to celebrate Fil-Am arts and culture.
