Pre-colonial Visayan attire used in GMA Network’s historical fiction series Amaya is set to be displayed in Vietnam for the 2020 ASEAN Summit this October.
The National Quincentennial Committee, the group that handles the preparation for the Philippine Quincentennial celebration in 2021, shared the good news on social media on October 3, 2020, that the Filipino-designed costumes will be part of the ASEAN Traditional Costume Exhibit on October 23 at the National Museum of Vietnamese History in Hanoi, Vietnam.
The male and female costumes were used by multi-awarded actors Raymond Bagatsing and Gina Alajar who played as royal couple Datu Bugna and Dian Lamitan for the top-rated Kapuso TV series Amaya top-billed by actress Marian Rivera.
The attires were designed by Gino Gonzales based on the c. 1590 Boxer Codex. The accessories, on the other hand, were patterned after the gold ornaments found in different locations in the Philippines and now on display at the Ayala Museum and the Museo ng Bangko Sentral.
The National Quincentennial Committee stated that “the pre-colonial attires were chosen as the Philippine entry to the said ASEAN exhibit in time for the country’s commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Victory at Mactan, the Philippine part in the first circumnavigation of the world, and other related events in 2021.”
After the ASEAN Traditional Costume Exhibit at the National Museum of Vietnamese History, the costumes will also be displayed at the Philippine Embassy in Vietnam before their return to Manila.
The Quincentennial team had earlier released a Paper Dolls collection wearing indigenous dress as part of the Philippines’ celebrations.
