A quarantine facility, partly made of eco-bricks and upcycled plastic bottles, is being built by the town’s folk of Saint Bernard in Southern Leyte.
The facility will prioritize the Locally Stranded Individuals (LSIs) and probable COVID-19 patients of the town who need to be isolated to stop the spread of the virus.
The town locals from its 28 barangays are working together to build 8 blocks of recycled plastic bottles to serve as the perimeter fence of the facility while eco-bricks are being laid out as flooring.
The eco-building is being constructed under the Php 10 million budget of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region VIII under Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan-Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (KALAHI-CIDSS) Program.
The DSWD Region 8 shared on social media on August 27, 2020, that the initiative was inspired by the town’s Ecological Solid Waste Management to use the plastic wastes as alternative materials for the quarantine facility.
Saint Bernard Mayor Manuel Calapre said the initiative helps people cope with the COVID-19 pandemic while continuing to care for the environment.
“It is a way to encourage people not to only face the pandemic but also to make use of the plastics in a beneficial way and it also serves as the local counterpart to the program,” said Mayor Calapre.
Municipal Engineer Engr. Alberto Bulagsac assured the public of the durability of the materials.
“The recycled plastic bottles and eco-bricks have been proven and tested as good tools as fence and path walk,” said Engr. Bulagsac.
The completion of the Leyte town quarantine facility including the medical supplies, amenities, and other equipment is expected to be finished this October.
Quarantine facilities across the Philippines include a building in the Port Area that has been turned into a comfortable quarantine facility for seafarers and OFW repatriates.
The Rizal Memorial Coliseum, PICC, and WTC have also been converted to quarantine facilities with help of private contractors.
