The Manila City Hall’s Lagusnilad underpass makeover project is bringing back its famed underground bookstore.
The Books from Underground, considered a haven for hard-to-find book editions, is set to make a comeback in the modernized Lagusnilad Underpass near the historic Manila City Hall.
Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso announced the return of the bookstore which was closed when the underpass repairs started in November 2019.
Architect Ali Bahoy of the Manila Department of Engineering and Public Works (DEPW) shared that the renovation of the underpass is inspired by the city’s heritage structures, namely, the Manila City Hall and the Walled City of Intramuros.
The Manila Public Information Office shared on August 17 some photos of the new look of the Lagusnilad underpass.
Books from Underground will have better displays of its books offered to pedestrians and book lovers.
Murals about Philippine historical events can be seen on the walls of the underpass.
Vertical gardens and signages are added at the entry and exit paths of the pedestrian underpass that connects the historic Walled City of Intramuros to Manila City Hall.
The Manila Interactive Info Desk will also be set up at the Lagusnilad Underpass.
The Manila City government worked with the University of Santo Tomas (UST) College of Architecture alumni and faculty, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) Gerilya Artist Collective, and Raven Rivota in the Lagusnilad Underpass rehabilitation project.
Manila City Engineer Armand Andres said in a Manila Public Information live stream that the rehabilitated Lagusnilad Underpass will be unveiled by the end of August 2020.
After the Lagusnilad underpass project is completed, the Manila city government is set to work on the Lawton underpass that connects to Intramuros, and the installation of a fountain at Anda Circle at the boundary of Intramuros and Port Area.
Manila City has been developing its historic structures such as the wartime Jones Bridge in Binondo and the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
