Google is celebrating Filipino artist, feminist, and activist Pacita Abad with a Doodle on the popular browser’s home page on Friday, July 31, 2020.

The Google Doodle is seen in the internet browser’s home page in the Philippines, the United States, and Iceland.

On July 31 in 1984, Abad made history as the first woman to receive the Philippines’ prestigious Ten Outstanding Young Men award.

Google notes that Pacita Abad is internationally renowned for her bold use of color and mixed media as well as her use of art to address global socio-political themes.

She worked on six different continents and traveled to more than 50 countries, creating over 4,500 artworks that were exhibited in more than 200 museums and galleries around the world.

Abad was born on October 5th, 1946 in Basco, Batanes. She graduated with a degree in Political Science at the University of the Philippines Diliman in 1967 then went on to study in the United States.

In her travels around the world, the Filipino artist picked up both artistic styles and themes that addressed social issues resulting in works such as her 1979 series “Portraits of Cambodia” to raise awareness of societal issues.

Before she passed away in 2004, Pacita Abad created her 2003 project, “Painted Bridge”, for which she covered Singapore’s 55-meter Alkaff Bridge with an explosion of 2,350 vibrantly colored circles.

“Thank you, Pacita Abad, for painting the picture of a brighter tomorrow!”

Google has featured many Filipinos in its Doodle series.

Just last July 25, the Philippines’ King of Comedy Dolphy was featured in a Doodle to celebrate his birth anniversary.

In January, Google featured UST and PNU language teacher Genoveva Matute in another Doodle.
