The annual Virgin Labfest that produces and stages outstanding new Filipino plays will be staged online this year as the lockdown edition amid the community quarantine to stop the spread of coronavirus disease.

The yearly project of the Manila-based playwrights’ group Writers Bloc and co-presented by the Cultural Center of the Philippines and CCP’s resident theater company Tanghalang Pilipino has gained a reputation for producing provocative and outstanding ‘virgin’ plays.

“The Virgin Labfest braves a new front and adjusts to new realities as the playwrights, directors, and actors take a further leap of faith to bring the annual festival of untried, untested, and unstaged works on a virtual stage,” said Virgin Labfest on its website announcement for its 16th edition.

Dubbed “VLF 2020 KAPIT: Lab in the Time of Covid (A Virtual Labfest Edition),” the lockdown edition will feature:

  • 9 New Works
  • 3 ‘Revisited’ works
  • 6 Staged Readings
  • dramatic readings of works from the VLF Writing Fellowship Program
  • Playwright’s Fair
  • CoLab: Conversations with VLF Collaborators and Creators

The series of panel discussions will tackle the topics of directing, design, stage management, and play-writing.

Virgin Labfest will stream from June 10 – 28, 2020, with premieres on CCP’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page, while CoLab and Playwrights Fair will have special screenings on iWantTV after the CCP premiere.
