“The Saudi Pinoy” vlogger Ahmed Alruwaili’s two new videos are paying tribute to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and Pinoy nurses in the frontlines of the global health crisis.
Ahmed, who describes himself as “a pure Saudi boy with a Filipino heart” and starts off his vlogs saying, “Kabayan!”, had dedicated his vlogs to earning advertising money to give back to the Filipino community.
Alruwaili’s video titled “Small Things For Great Heroes” was uploaded on his YouTube and Facebook accounts on March 28, 2020. In the video, Alruwaili is seen buying flowers and La Paz Batchoy to give to Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) nurses whom he met on the street.
“Hello Kabayan! As you guys know coronavirus is taking all over the world, and I wanted to thank all the nurses, especially the OFW nurses. So, I got some bulaklak and La Paz Batchoy. I’m gonna give it to the nurses that I’m gonna meet in the street,” the Saudi national said in the video while wearing a “Pilipinas” basketball jersey.
The 29-year-old Riyadh-based Alruwaili is himself a nurse. He started blogging in July 2019 because he loves Filipinos and loves to make OFWs laugh “cuz they deserve to laugh.” Most of the content of his short vlogs focuses on Filipino jokes, funny skits, and advice and messages to Filipinos.
At the end of the video, he left a message for everyone: “Kabayan, the reason why I made this is just to remind ikaw about all the hard work that the nurses are doing all over the world, especially the OFW nurses against this coronavirus. So we all need to pray and appreciate all the nurses for their hard work. The nurses now are the true hero, talaga! I hope you guys get my message. Salamat!”
In another video that he posted on April 3, the Pinoy-at-heart vlogger gave away basketball jerseys to OFWs saying the money came from earnings in the previous vlog. He captioned the video, “Let’s sprinkle some positive energy in these negative times” and again thanked OFWs.
“I want you all to know OFW people that Saudiano, we all love and appreciate all the OFW people here in KSA because you guys are a true legend, I promise. Because OFW people you all working extra extra extra hard not for yourself but just to support your family in the Ph. So I want to say thank you so much, and I hope you guys accept the small gift that I gave to the OFW people that I saw on the street. Salamat!”
Netizen comments on the video thankes the Saudi Arabian nurse and appreciated his kindness.
“This kind hearted guy is a real hero! He saw how the nurses and doctors did their best to ease the panic and fear from the patients by just being there in their workplace without fear. True heroes talaga!” netizen Jocelyn Mercado Banno commented.
“Keep it up brother! May God bless you. You made me cry. nakakataba ng puso bilang Filipino,” Reuel Roy commented in the Facebook post.
Another Pinoy-at-heart vlogger, Poland-born Agon Hare of Project Nightfall and Nas Daily, sent cheers and positive messages to Filipinos as Luzon went on lockdown with an island-wide quarantine.
Filipino YouTuber Apet Cruz also posted a video of him reciting a poem dedicated to his fellow workers in the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic – and the poem has gone viral after being embraced by workers and their families.
