Iloilo in the Visayas, home of the January festival of Dinagyang, is gearing up to be known as the model of traffic discipline in the Philippines with its initiative to strictly enforce both local and national road and traffic regulations.

The city government of Iloilo declared on January 16 the 14-kilometer stretch of the Senator Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue or Diversion road in Mandurriao District as a “Traffic Discipline Zone (TDZ)”.

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas said the implementation of the TDZ seeks to address traffic areas that have become unmanageable.

Personnel from the Land Transportation Office (LTO) 6 and the Highway Patrol Group (HPG) of the Philippine National Police (PNP) will patrol the area while Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO) personnel will be stationed to monitor the area from 6:30 am to 10:00 pm.

The LTO will use breath analyzers and high-tech speed guns to help enforce laws on speed limit and other road and traffic regulations. These regulations include speed limit, anti-modified mufflers, proper loading and unloading, among others, said the Iloilo City PIO.

The stricter enforcement of applicable road rules is set to begin on January 19, three days after the TDZ declaration and an information campaign.

Col. Winston de Belen, chief of the PNP-HPG, reminded traffic enforcers to always be courteous and always remember that they are public servants.

Plans to implement the Traffic Discipline Zone in McArthur Drive in Jaro district are also underway.

Iloilo City streets lit up in December with 1500 Christmas lanterns made by inmates. In November Iloilo was named as an ASEAN Clean Tourist City Awardee.

Iloilo International Airport has joined Mactan-Cebu among the Best in Asia in the 2019 Sleeping in Airports Survey.

Other initiatives in the country to ease the traffic problem include Baguio City’s cable car system, the opening of the Skyway SLEX-NLEX connector road, and the opening of the LRT-1 Cavite train route.

SEND well wishes to the people of Iloilo City as they rise as the Philippines’ model of traffic discipline!
