Forbes Asia named Hans Sy, Chairman of the Executive Committee and Director of SM Prime Philippines, as among the 2019 Heroes of Philanthropy for his work with cancer-stricken children.
Hans Sy joins the list of 30 outstanding altruists that Forbes Asia has chosen for its 13th annual Heroes of Philanthropy which honors billionaires, entrepreneurs, and celebrities across the region “who are committed to solving some of the most pressing issues facing the Asia-Pacific.”
The Filipino billionaire and son of SM Supermalls founder Henry Sy were named together with Filipina celebrity Angel Locsin and China’s Jack Ma in the list released December 2.
The 64-year-old Hans Sy was cited for celebrating his birthday in 2015 by buying property in Manila to provide shelter to the cancer-stricken children and caregivers of Child Haus. Sy had afterward led SM Prime to acquire a second property in Quezon City, also for Child Haus. Sy and his associates continue to sponsor the operating expenses of the center.
Forbes Asia’s 2019 Heroes Of Philanthropy: Catalysts For Change staff writer Grace Chung wrote that they chose the 30 honorees from among dozens of candidates, “reviewing their monetary contributions, the depth of their involvement and the reach of their philanthropic efforts. Our aim is to highlight those giving their own money, not their company’s (unless they are the majority owners of a privately-held firm). We also don’t include those who are full-time fundraisers or foundation heads, unless they’ve personally given the bulk of funds to start a charitable organization.”
Forbes Asia’s Heroes of Philanthropy named three Filipinos in 2018 and two Filipinos in 2016.
SEND cheers in the comments below to Hans Sy and all the Forbes Asia honorees for their charitable actions!
