The Philippines’ campaign for top medalist finish at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) is on course midway through the biennial meet as Day 6 ended with the tally boards showing 71 gold, 55 silver, and 50 bronze for a total of 176 medals for the host nation.
Asian Games gold medalist Bianca Pagdanganan routed competitors in golf as the Obstacle Course Racing team again ruled the 30th SEA Games debut of the sport.

OBSTACLE COURSE RACING
Obstacle Course Racing continues to be a gold nest for the Philippines as Sandi Menchu Abahan opened the Day 6 campaign of the Philippines with a gold medal in the Women’s Individual 5Kx20 Obstacles.
Mervin Guarte made it a double win for the country with a top 1 medal in the Men’s Individual 5k x20 Obstacles.
MARATHON
A surprise surge in the Women’s Marathon event propelled first-time SEA Games marathoner Christine Hallasgo to a gold, upsetting fellow Filipina and 2017 SEA Games defending champion, Mary Joy Tabal.
The 27-year-old clocked in at 2:56:56 of the 42-kilometer race to finish on top of the medal standings at the New Clark City Athletics Stadium in Capas, Tarlac.
Hallasgo, who hails from Malaybalay, Bukidnon, shed tears in front of the media as she recalled her sacrifices to join the SEA Games, including leaving her 3-year-old child at home.
PENTATHLON
Modern Pentathlon’s Filipino hero, Michael Ver Anton Comaling, won gold in the Men’s Individual Beach Triathlete event.
JUDO
Judoka Mariya Takahashi gave the Philippines a gold medal in the Women’s Judo 70kg. finals.
SQUASH
Team Philippines’ Jemyca Aribado, Reymark Begornia, Robert Andrew Garcia, and David William Pelino put in an excellent rally to win the Squash Mixed Team event.
GOLF
Asiad, Ladies Professional Golf Association, and Santi Cup gold medalist Bianca Pagdanganan won her first SEA Games gold for the Philippines in the Women’s Golf Individual Stroke Play event with a 290 card after three rounds.
The Philippines’ current gold medal standing has breached the midpoint of its 2005 SEA Games top medalist showing of 113 gold. Day 8 on Sunday will be crucial to the host nation’s campaign as the most number of gold medals at 91 are at stake on December 8 while 80 golds are up for grabs on December 9.
Day 6 ended with Indonesia at second spot with 40 gold medals and Vietnam at 3rd rank with 38.
The 2019 SEA Games’ 56 sports and 530 events run until December 11, 2019, in sports hubs located in Manila, Southern Luzon and La Union, Subic, and at the New Clark City.
