Grace Christian College (GCC) Junior High School students delivered a big win for their school and the Philippines after emerging as Overall Junior Champions at the 2019 World Scholar’s Cup (WSC) Tournament of Champions held at Yale University in the United States.
The team of GCC students Andrew Kyle Tan, Kylie Danielle Sy, and Krystal Lim Tiong was number 1-ranked among the ten top junior teams in the Senior Division of competitions held from November 8-13 that drew 570 champion teams from 61 countries to the premier university in Connecticut
The GCC junior high students also placed 1st in collaborative writing and won a total of 37 gold and silver medals.
The Grace Christian School students had to pass through regional rounds and global rounds to qualify in the WSC Tournament of Champions and eventually bested other winners from the 2019 global rounds held in Beijing, Astana, Hague/Amsterdam, Sydney, Manila, Durban.
The GCC Awards at the WSC 2019 Tournament of Champions in Yale:
* 1st place (overall champion) Junior Team in the Senior division
* 1st in collaborative writing
* 8th in team subject challenge
* 10th in the quiz bowl portion
* 37 individual gold and silver medals.
Grace Christian College became a champion school at the World Scholar’s Cup Tournament of Champions that features four skill-building, point-earning events: Collaborative Writing, Team Debate, Scholar’s Challenge, and the Scholar’s Bowl. The 2,700 participants of the 2019 WSC were tested across 6 areas of discipline: Literature, Social Studies, Science and Technology, Art & Music, History, and Special Area.

Three parents accompanied the GCC champion team at Yale University, with one of the mothers, Jane Ong Lim, serving as the team coach.
Good News Pilipinas interviewed Grace Christian College Chaplain Rev. Dr. Stephen G. Tan, one of the parent chaperones, about the experience of witnessing the champion team compete against the world’s best.
Asked how the students reacted to being named Overall Champions, Dr. Tan revealed, “The students (along with the parents) were stunned when they announced our school as being the overall junior team champions. It was honestly unexpected knowing the many high caliber schools that were part of the competition. But once reality set in, the students were ecstatic and humbly received their award and gave glory to God!”
Grace Christian College (formerly High School) in Quezon City, a school started in 1950 by noted educator Julia L. Tan, an educational pioneer in the Philippines, had previously sent teams to the World Scholar’s Cup competitions also with successful stints, but this is the first Overall Championship for the school.
“As a parent and part of the school administration headed by Dr. James Tan (President of the school), joining an international competition like this exposes our students to the highest international standards of academic and educational excellence and to see how we measure up. It also gives an opportunity for our students to interact with students from around the world to help them better understand the beauty of other cultures,” Dr. Tan said.
Asked by Good News Pilipinas what made this team excel in the 2019 WSC, Dr. Tan shared, “In my opinion, this team excelled because they had a great rapport and each of them complimented one another. They worked very well together as a team.”
The 2019 WSC TOC also witnessed a successful stint from the Lyceum University of the Philippines Batangas High School.
Previous World Scholar’s Cup tourneys also gave medals to teams from Miriam College and La Salle Green Hills.
