Centuries-old San Agustin Church inside the historic walled city of Intramuros in Manila is undergoing restorative cleanup with German technology – for free.
Kärcher, a German firm that invented the cleaning technology, is sponsoring the cleanup of the UNESCO World Heritage Site’s facade which began November 15 and ends on November 21.
Completed in 1607 and the oldest church in the country, San Agustin Church or the Shrine of Our Lady of Consolacion y Correa is a Roman Catholic church under the auspices of The Order of St. Augustine.
Rev. Fr. Ricky Villar, director of San Agustin Museum, says he is grateful for the company for choosing the church since it has been 6 years since San Agustin had a cleaning. This time, the process is faster through the help of the cleaning technology created by Kärcher.
“This technology expedites the process, which is beneficial because the church is visited by people every day,” Villar said.
The Germany-based cleaning equipment manufacturer also expressed interest in providing the restorative technology to other centuries-old churches in the Philippines.
“Nothing official yet but Barasoain Church and Malate Church were floated,” Kärcher Philippines general manager Mark Palisoc said. “Somewhere in Cebu also, those sites are also considered to be part of this ‘Karcher Cleans the World’, but we don’t commit yet because this goes through a lot of processes.”
Prior to cleaning San Agustin Church, Kärcher had already conducted cleaning initiatives in other prominent structures in the Philippines such as the Rizal Monument in Manila and the People Power Monument in Quezon City.
Other historical structures in the Philippines are being rehabilitated and restored after suffering damages due to calamities and aging deterioration such as the Jones Bridge, the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, the Metropolitan Theater, and heritage churches in Bohol and Ilocos.
