Watch out for “The Fabulous Filipino Brothers”, the film that marks the directorial debut of Filipino-American Hollywood actor and poet Dante Basco.
Dante Basco is known as the first Fil-Am to make it in Hollywood and a pioneer in Asian American cinema with a career that spans over two and a half decades.
Dante is best remembered for playing the role of Rufio, leader of the Lost Boys, in the 1991 Steven Spielberg film “Hook” with the late Robin Williams. He also played the role of Prince Zuko in the 2010 film “Avatar: The Last Airbender” by M. Night Shyamalan.
Dante Basco announced earlier this week his wrapping up of filming and going into post-production for his feature film about the adventures of four brothers.
Starring himself and his brothers Darion, Dionysio, and Derek, the dark romantic comedy weaves together four stories narrated by their sister, Arianna.
The Basco brothers also starred in “The Debut”, the first Filipino-American feature film to be released in theaters nationwide in 2002.
Dante revealed on social media that in The Fabulous Filipino Brothers” they were playing characters named after their dad and his brothers – David, Duke, Danny Boy, and Dayo.
The screenplay was written by Dante Basco and his brothers Darion and Dionysio and is set amidst the brothers’ hometown of Pittsburg, California, a working-class suburb of Oakland.
The film synopsis: “The story follows the brothers and their shenanigans. One of them ventures off to a cockfight for reciprocity while one flies to old Manila where an old flame is rekindled. Another brother delves into the hidden sensuality of Filipino cuisine, while the last brother, struggles to heal deep wounds and finds love in an unexpected package. All this, leading to a shotgun wedding in the backyard of the family house.”
Dante and the crew of The Fabulous Filipino Brothers also filmed scenes in Manila with Filipino-French actress Solenn Heussaff.
Filipinos and Fil-Ams have shown much interest in Dante Basco’s film and are looking forward to support the Filipino-starred, directed, and produced movie when it comes out.
Dante Basco is currently on a book signing tour of his newly released book memoir, “From Rufio to Zuko”.
Dante Basco had earlier this year announced his intent to work on developing a Philippine youth culture webcomics into a feature film.
The Hollywood Asian American icon was also a featured world-class Pinoy at the Toycon Philippines.
Fil-Ams have been showcasing their heritage in film, among them, Fil-Am animator Bobby Rubio’s Filipino-themed short film “Float” which was released by Disney Pixar this week.
Filmmaker Diane Paragas’ musical drama film “Yellow Rose” starring Eva Noblezada and Lea Salonga is currently making the rounds of festivals, receiving awards and nominations.
