The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) hailed Cebu as a Creative City of Design, making the Central Visayas city the Philippines’ second to receive the title after Baguio City.
Cebu successfully achieved its new distinction a few months after the city submitted its bid to be classified as Creative City in July 2019.
The Philippines’ Queen City of the South was announced on October 30 as a Creative City of Design alongside 65 other international cities described to be “working together towards a common mission, which is to place creativity and the creative economy at the core of urban developments to make cities safe, resilient, inclusive and sustainable” in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for 2030.
Cebu City now joins Baguio City which was named in 2017 and 244 other cities all over the world designated UNESCO Creative Cities under the 7 categories of crafts and folk arts, gastronomy, literature, film, media arts, music, and design.
“All over the world, these cities, each in its way, make culture the pillar, not an accessory, of their strategy. This favours political and social innovation and is particularly important for the young generations,” UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said in the UNESCO statement.
MATIQ Hub, a multi-disciplinary enabling space for Cebuano designers, pushed for the new designation the city of Cebu is now enjoying.
Cebu, voted by world travelers as one of Asia’s Best Islands, has been known for being a cradle of creative minds and beautiful people where eco-sports tourism is being developed, startups create sustainable products, and people unite to reduce waste.
Cebu has been put in the world map of sustainable fashion as the home of multi-awarded furniture designer and manufacturer Kenneth Cobonpue and Trashion creator Francis Sollano.
Cebu is also the home of Miss Universe Philippines 2019 Gazini Ganados and Mister Tourism and Culture Universe Yves Campos.
SEND congratulations to the people of Cebu for championing culture and arts in their development strategy!
