The people of Sorsogon province danced a love and courtship dance on a five-kilometer stretch of the main street of its capital city to set a new Guinness World Record (GWR) for the Largest Filipino Folk Dance.
Dancers wearing the colors of the Philippine flag in yellow, red, blue, and white performed a 30-minute synchronized dance of the “Pantomina Sa Tinampo” to set the new world record on October 31, 2019, marking its 125th Founding Anniversary.
The rains did not stop the officially recorded total of 7,127 participating dancers from all over Sorsogon who came to the city to perform the Filipino folk dance along the Rompeolas Baywalk up to Bulwagan to Fatima Church to bag the first-ever world record for the Largest Filipino Folk Dance.
“Pantomina Sa Tinampo” is a traditional Bicolano dance with movements inspired by the courtship and lovemaking of doves.
Sorsogon Governor Francis “Chiz” Escudero and his wife, model-actress, celebrity endorser and Youtube Vlogger Heart Evangelista, led thousands of dancers, with the men clad in white camisa de chino and the women in yellow, red, and blue kimona dresses.
Guinness World Records official adjudicator Swapnil Dangarikar personally witnessed and evaluated the record-setting performance of the Sorsoganons and declared the new Guinness World Record at the end of the event.
The Guinness adjudicator, who has been to the Philippines a total of ten times for record events, said of the Sorsogon feat, “It was such a beautiful performance… this would be one of my most favorite records that I’ve ever seen.”
GWR announced the record on its social media quoting adjudicator Swapnil, “Even with heavy rain all day, the participants turned up and it was a beautiful sight in their colourful attire.”

“More than the record, bigger than the record is what we saw a couple of months ago, a few weeks ago, bawat opisina nagpa-practice. Umuulan, umaaraw nagpa practice.
(Practice went on through rainy and sunny days. Everyone was working towards one goal and dream for the province. Whether or not we set the record, the truth is the province is already a winner because of what you all did. As Vice Governor Wowo said, the Sorsoganos can indeed work together in sync towards one direction. I now ask you all to bring our unity beyond dancing, towards efforts to develop our province,” Governor Escudero said about the province’s unified action towards a new world record.
The record-setting folk dance presentation concluded Sorsogon’s month-long celebration of Kasanggayahan Festival 2019.
Sorsogon’s efforts to preserve and promote the love and courtship dance had previously been cited by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and the Philippine Folk Dance Society.
