The Filipino film “Musmos na Sumibol sa Gubat ng Digma” won the Special Jury Prize at the 2019 Baikal International Film Festival in Russia.
Subtitled “Unless the Water is Safer than the Land”, the social drama was given the Special Jury Award For Poetical Problem Solution during the competitions held in Irkutsk last September.
The film’s writer-director Iar Lionel Benjamin Arondaing announced on social media the honor given to the film that debuted at the Cinemalaya 2018.
Prior to Russia, “Musmos” also won Best Cinematography for Mac Cosico at the Figueira da Foz-Film Art Festival 2019 in Portugal.
“Musmos na Sumibol sa Gubat ng Digma”, filmed in San Vicente in world-renowned Palawan, is described as a coming-of-age tale about a 12-year-old girl named Eshal set amid an age-old culture of inter-familial dispute called the Rido, characterized by a series of retaliation that uses violence to avenge a reproach or injustice – real or imaginary – among disputing clans, crossing generations and often resulting to fatalities.
The Musmos cast includes Junyka M. Santarin, Juan Miguel Emmanuel Salvado, Star Orjaliza, Jun Salvado Jr., Romerico Jangad, Darril Ampongan, and Haide Movero.
Arondaing worked with producers Minda Monica Ponce-Rodriguez, Vian Serranila, Arlene Sy, Icy Mariñas, and Jed Medrano on the film that won at the 18th Baikal film fest.
Musmos adds to the Filipino films which have earned several international recognitions including Signal Rock, Ngiti ni Nazareno, and Last Order.
