More than 400 sites all over the Philippines are now connected to fast and free Wi-Fi, thanks to Google Station’s free internet access program.
Google’s Next Billion Users initiative has expanded to over 400 sites since its launch with 50 live stations including Manila-based transit systems, select provincial universities and colleges, as well as airports in Manila, Clark, and Davao.
The tech giant’s joint partnership with PLDT, Inc. and Smart Communications, Inc., for Google’s Next Billion Users initiative was launched last February with the sole purpose of providing Internet access that is fast, free, and for every Filipino.
Google Station’s initial monthly report notes the need for access as around one million active users are averaging 22 minutes of Internet usage for multiple times every day.
“This collaboration with PLDT and SMART, hopefully, will lead to installation of Google Station in more locations nationwide so Filipinos can connect to opportunities and benefit from the growing digital economy,” K Suri, Google director for Next Billion Users for Southeast Asia explained in a statement released in July.
“This is just the beginning,” Suri continued. “We remain committed to serving the Filipino community with fast, free and open Wi-Fi so more people can join the millions of Filipinos already using Google Station.”
Google Philippines has addressed the Philippine market with several initiatives including the addition of Philippine languages on Google Translate, and Philippine native scripts on its Gboard virtual keyboard, helping Filipino news organizations with the Google News Initiative, and has even called for the preservation of the Puerto Princesa Underground River.
