Zamboanga City welcomed its first batch of electric tricycles (e-trikes) as part of the city’s public utility vehicles modernization program.
The 38 units of e-trikes unveiled on August 13 were made in Italy and are Euro 4-compliant.
World Mayor Prize awardee Mayor Beng Climaco said in an I Love ZC TV report that the first batch of e-trikes was rolled out as part of the previously-approved ordinance that directs tricycles to be part of the modernization program.
The city mayor revealed that the new units will be released through cooperatives. The new franchise owners of the e-trikes will also be directed to turn over their old tricycles to avoid duplication of units.
The Zamboanga City e-trikes were purchased with funding assistance from the ZGEMPCO group and the Land Bank of the Philippines.
The Zamboanga City government is targeting to complete its transport modernization within 5 years.
Philippine cities have started their transport modernization programs such as e-trikes in Bacoor City in Cavite and electric jeepneys and hybrid buses in Cebu.
SEND congratulations in the comments below for the people of Zamboanga City for championing pollution-free transportation!
