Batangueno 11-year-old chess prodigy Rocky Romero is the country’s newest FIDE master.
Gladimir Chester “Rocky” Falconit Romero, who hails from Tanauan City, earned the FIDE Master (FM) title during the 4th Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship held in Bangkok, Thailand on August 9.
A report by Marlon Bernardino identified the grade six pupil of Mabini Educational Institution in Brgy. Talaga, as having emerged champion in the Open Under 12 division of the Thailand tourney.
The Filipino FM bested Indonesia’s Handaru Juan Izz Linardhi to claim the gold in his division. Romero competed among 31 participants from 12 countries.
The Fide Master title follows the International and Grand Master ranks and is earned through garnering a FIDE (World Chess Federation) rating of at least 2300 or winning the Asia Youth Chess Championship.
