The lives of Filipino heroes are on showcase at the National Heroes Retrospective Film Festival – now showing for free at the Shangri-La Plaza.
The free movie screening aims to honor Filipino heroes as the nation observes Philippine Independence month in June. The film festival also marks 2019 as the 100th year anniversary of Philippine cinema.
The festival started on June 19, coinciding with the 158th birth anniversary of Jose Rizal.
The National Heroes Retrospective Film Festival is presented by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), Sandaan: Celebration of 100 Years of the Philippine Cinema, and Shangri-La Plaza.

Here are the six Filipino movies being screened at the National Heroes Retrospective Film Festival in Shangri-La Plaza:
ANG HAPIS AT HIMAGSIK NI HERMANO PULI
Directed by the late Gil Portes, the movie “Ang Hapis at Himagsik ni Hermano Puli” stars Aljur Abrenica. It tells the story of the struggles of Apolinario dela Cruz from Quezon Province. Dela Cruz played a major role in the uprising against the Spanish colonizers and died fighting for religious freedom.

ANG KABABAIHAN NG MALOLOS
The Kababaihan ng Malolos is a musical docu-drama directed by Sari Raissa Lluch Dalena and Kiri Dalena. The 2014 production showcases the story of the women of Malolos, Bulacan who fought for their rights to education.

BONIFACIO: ANG UNANG PANGULO
The movie “Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo” tells the story of the life of the Father of the Philippine Revolution. The film is topbilled by the 1990s iconic love team of Robin Padilla and Vina Morales. The film is directed by Enzo Williams and was an official entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival in 2014.

GOYO: ANG BATANG HENERAL
Popular actor Paulo Avelino played the role Goyo, the hero and young general who fought the American troops in Tirad Pass and eventually lost his life. The movie is directed by Jerrold Tarog.

HENERAL LUNA
“Heneral Luna” is another Tarog-directed film. It tells the story of Heneral Antonio Luna who is tagged as the hero of the millennials. This movie is described by historian Ambeth Ocampo as “an engaging narrative, supported by wonderful cinematography, and grounded on sound historical research.”

JOSE RIZAL
This 1998 movie about the life story of Jose Rizal is directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya and starred Cesar Montano. It earned awards, citations and nominations from various festivals and award-giving bodies in the Philippines and abroad.
