Filipino social innovation Liter of Light founder Illac Diaz and Chief Strategist Ami Valdemoro have returned to the Philippines after their 100-Day Solar Lighting Mission on the Peace Boat and have rejoined their team in teaching Manila FAME exhibitors and participants how to create inexpensive solar lamps.
The Edison Awards recipient and featured Filipino technology in Steven Spielberg’s new Dreamworks film, “The Power of I” now showing at the Universal Sphere in Philadelphia, briefed media on April 26 at the CITEM Lounge of the Manila FAME exhibition about how Filipinos are being regarded as humanitarian aid givers of light with the help of the Liter of Light (1LL).
Welcoming the Liter of Light leaders back to the country were CITEM Manila FAME’s Head of PR and Marketing, Yan Abeledo and Department of Foreign Affairs Acting Assistant Secretary for Strategic Communications and Research, Dr. Emmanuel Fernandez.
Answering the Good News Pilipinas inquiry about the Liter of Light social innovation being taught to local schools, 4Gamechangers speaker Illac Diaz said he sees the need to build up youth mindsets to create humanitarian innovations.
Diaz called on the nation’s youth “to share that knowledge to other people that needs your brain power and design that can make their lives better, especially in the Philippines with so much poverty.
It’s great to design and be successful, but bring as many people as you can along with your success.”
Presenting the Liter of Light exhibition at the World Trade Center’s Manila FAME, Diaz thanked the CITEM group for giving them a platform to meet young people and promote the humanitarian side of innovation.
CITEM’s Yan Abeledo acknowledged the gratefulness of 1LL, saying it is their mission to help promote Filipino ingenuity and creativity to the world as the export and promotion arm of the Department of Trade and industry.
“We saw the Liter of Light project as one of those that catapult inventiveness of Filipinos with their world tour massive project that comes from the grassroots and able to touch the lives of so many people around the world.”
Manila FAME has been involved in many social advocacy such as the Great Women project and economic empowerment of women and has offered 1LL a platform to reach more audiences.
DFA Assistant Secretary Emmanuel Fernandez said he looked forward to seeing the Liter of Light meeting school children.
“I would like Mr. Diaz and his team to have a chance to go around schools to meet young people. Not simply to involve technology, but to actually spread a contagion for humanitarian work.
I look at Mr. Diaz and his team as very good role models for our youth. They embody the spirit of helping which is unfortunately lacking in many people nowadays rarely do you find a young man and woman with a vision of going to school and helping people with what they learn in school,” added Dr. Fernandez.
Liter of Light is now preparing for the observance of the International Day of Light on May 16.
