American Comic book writer Greg Pak revealed on Twitter the designer of Marvel’s mysterious new Filipino heroine to debut on War of the Realms, New Agents of Atlas is actually Filipino comic book artist Leinil Yu.

“Wave,” Marvel’s new Filipina Superhero unveiled at the South by Southwest conference (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, is co-created and designed by Yu, and colored by Sunny Gho.

“Although I supplied her visual look, her core characteristics were already conceived in text by Greg Pak, the writer known for bringing Asian heroes to the forefront, including her being Cebuana. He knows his stuff. I gave Wave her fins, the sword, the head gear and the tech look,” Leinil Yu told Good News Pilipinas.

GNP learned that Yu coincidentally lived in Cebu during his pre-teen years. The Philippine-based international comic artist also told Manila Bulletin that he was indeed inspired to give the Filipina Marvel hero the likes of Cebu hero Lapu-Lapu’s sword.

The artist is himself considered a “Rockstar” among the comics illustration circles for being sought-after by international comic book publishers. He is the artist of the 2018 Captain America series, and his work with Marvel includes Wolverine, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk and New Avengers, and Star Wars’ Darth Vader. He also recently collaborated with DC Comics for its new Batman art.

Manila-based artist Yu said on Instagram that he is “Really proud to design WAVE.” Netizens are equally proud. A Reddit user noticed that Waves weapons are inspired by Filipino blades and praised the artist for it. Twitter user Reagan Quejada also commended the weapon design, stating its similarity to the Kampilan, a traditional Filipino single-edged sword.

Wave will appear for the first time in the comics War of the Realms, New Agents of Atlas #1, written by Greg Pak and illustrated by Gang-Hyuk Lim. It is available for pre-order now and will be available at comic book stores by May 2019.
