Eight-year-old math whiz kid Zac Harvey Gordula of Los Baños in Laguna brought home two gold medals and a trophy from the 2019 Singapore Math Global Team Competition held in Vietnam.
The Grade 3 student enrolled at Lopez Elementary School in Laguna grabbed his 2 gold medals by convincingly winning in the individual challenge and as part of his 1st-ranked team.
Zac Gordula also earned a trophy as the Overall Runner-up placer among all Grade 3 students who joined the competition held in Ho Chi Minh City from November 22 – 26.
The young Gordula’s top victories in the Singapore “Singa” global math challenge was posted on social media by his mother, Cherille Zaira Gordula, who revealed to Good News Pilipinas that Zac has been interested in mathematics since he was 3 years old.
Even at a much younger age, Zac who wants to be a math teacher could read numbers even up to millions and billions.
Zac’s mom said she is extremely proud of her son’s achievements and could not find the exact words to describe her feelings at the young math whiz kid’s winning another international math competition title this year.
Zac’s first international competition was the 5th Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC) held last July 2019 where the young math whiz bagged one gold and two bronze medals in the Math Warriors and Mind Sports contests.
“Singa” is a Singapore Math Global Team Competition with 3 members in each team. It is a unique new math competition participated in by different countries like China, Cambodia, Indonesia, India, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
The focus in “Singa” is very strong on teamwork and the Gold-winning groups show high levels of collaboration, stamina and mutual support – as well as superlative math skills.
Questions in the competition are based on Singapore schools’ math questions which have a high content of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS).
Named after the lion in the name of Singapore itself, Singa is also brave, tough and noble: a thrilling team challenge that equips children everywhere for 21st Century learning.
Zac Harvey Gordula hopes to qualify for next year’s competition in Bulgaria.
Young Filipino math wizards have earned medal honors for the Philippines, among the more recent wins are golds, silvers, and bronze medals from South Africa, Singapore, and the United Kingdom.
