Three Filipino film projects are being presented at the 2020 Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland scheduled this August.
The 18th year edition of the Locarno Film Festival is set to feature the three Philippine films among the 17 projects for the annual showcase that will be held virtually this year amid the global coronavirus pandemic.
The selected projects from the Philippines – Tropical Gothic, Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah vs the Amazonistas of Planet X, and Filipiñana – will be part of Locarno projects that showcase the creative wealth of cinema while “they reveal the urgency with which their makers want to tell stories and share their views on the society they live in.”
Locarno’s Open Doors Hub for 8 established and emerging filmmakers from Southeast Asia will present the Philippines’ “Tropical Gothic” by Isabel Sandoval and the Philippines-France collaborative project “Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah vs the Amazonistas of Planet X” by Avid Liongoren.
Filipino auteur Isabel Sandoval, who launched her filmmaking career also at Locarno in 2011 with her first feature film, Señorita, is returning with her new feature film in development, Tropical Gothic. Sandoval more recently premiered her “Lingua Franca” in Venice.
The animation film Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah vs the Amazonistas of Planet X by Avid Liongoren holds the distinction of being the first animated film to be presented in the Open Doors.
Locarno’s Open Doors Lab for 9 film projects is presenting Filipiñana, the debut feature of Ram Mendoza that is produced by Kyle Nieva of Screen Asia.
The Locarno Film Festival will be seen on the web from August 5-15, 2020.
Filipino animated films “Oyayi” and “Papa Jorge’s Bedtime Radio Confessions” are currently featured at the Annecy Online Animated Film Fest.
