A mobile app-based electric tricycle (e-trike) ride-sharing system called “Hatid” has already started its test run at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman.
The “Hatid” app was made available on December 9, 2019 to the administrative personnel of UP Diliman as “beta-testers”.
The development of the e-trike mobile app is part of the Intelligent Electric Transportation Network (IntElect) project and funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DoST). IntElect is the combined effort of electric vechicles and charging stations to reduce energy use in small communities like UP Diliman.
“The IntElect project has three components. The first component is the hardware that includes the trikes and the charging infrastructure; second is the app with artificial intelligence (AI); and third is the deployment in Tuguegarao City,” said UP Diliman’s Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute associate professor and head of IntElect project, Lew Andrew R.Tria in an interview with Arjay L. Balinbin of BusinessWorld Online.
According to Tria, the system will be brought to the government center of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan Province after the test run within this month. “The DoST chose the regional government center in Tuguegarao City as our partner. The Cagayan State University is also within that area,” he said.
Tria also talked about the possibility to commercially launch the project in UP Diliman which required they come up with a business plan before September 2020. Also being eyed is the possibility of launching it as a start-up or for possible business models.
Currently, UP Diliman has one fast-charging station, donated by the Department of Energy, that takes 30 minutes for a full charge of a DoE 5-passenger e-trike that can run for 60 kilometers.
The future plans of IntElect team includes setting up four fast-charging stations at the regional government center in Tuguegarao City which also received 10 e-trike units from the DOE.

UP is also the home for Project NOAH’s disaster risk-reduction system.
And just recently, UP achieved another medical milestone as their Lab-in-a-Mug Dengue Test Kit is being sent out to the ASEAN region and the world to fight against the dengue disease.
SEND congratulations to the UP and Filipino science agencies for innovating on good tech!
