“This person is hopeless. He has always been lazy.”
“The only thing that he knows is to borrow money. He doesn’t know how to pay back.”
“Be careful about her attitude. Her character is questionable.”
There are some people who just don’t change over the years. This is just the truth.
It would be great if a person was mean before, but now he or she has become very kind; once very boastful, but now very humble; once stingy, but now generous. It’s nice to think of it this way, but such things don’t always happen so easily.
There are some people who find it difficult to change, or should I say, refuse to change. As much as we want to help them, we can only do so much. At the end of the day, to change or not to change is still their choice.
Before we decide to help these people change for the better, allow me to share some reasons why people are having a hard time coping up with change:
AFRAID OF CHANGE
There are people who don’t want to change because they are afraid of the change. Does this mean that people don’t want a new place to live, a new job, a new business, or a new opportunity? We all want this.
But what people are afraid of is the uncertainty that comes with CHANGE.
If I move to new place, will I like my neighbors? Will we get along?
If I move to a new job, will I like it? Will I be able to take on the responsibility?
IN THEIR COMFORT ZONES
Some people have gotten so used to where they are now, that even if they don’t eat at the right time because of their busyness, even if they’re not satisfied with where they are in life, they still refuse to change, and just choose to put up with everything and anything, just because they’ve already gotten used to how things are.
The mentality is this: “We’re okay. This is okay. This is the best that life can offer. We should just learn to accept that the circumstances can no longer change.”
DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO
Some people also resist change because they just don’t know how to start over or how to rebuild their lives. They simply don’t know what to do. They are so afraid to try something new because they lack the knowledge. They keep on making mistakes whenever they start something new, also because they lack the knowledge.
We all know that there are a lot of people who need help and who need change in their lives.
Until they resolve these three things in themselves, they will find it difficult to move on and change.
We can’t force people to CHANGE.
Forcing ourselves to change something before we are ready can be detrimental to our health and overall well-being. It is the same for other people.
We all have our own timing and phasing.
Change is an internal thing; it must be based on CONVICTION.
It should start and come from within.
If we force other people to change, not only can the effect be unhealthy, but it will also not last.
We can influence and help other people to change, but we cannot demand or force them.
THINK. REFLECT. APPLY.
Do you know someone who is resistant to change?
What practical steps did you take to help him or her?
Do you believe that people can change?
