The University of the Philippines Pep Squad (UP Pep Squad) raised the Philippine flag in Japan after scoring a Silver and a Bronze at the 2019 Cheerleading World Championships held November 23-24 in Takasaki.

The state university varsity cheerleaders won their Silver in the Cheerleading Senior All Female division with a score of 358 points to secure the second spot next to Japan. The Philippines bested Germany, United Kingdom, and Indonesia.

The UP Pep Squad won their Bronze in the Cheerleading Small Groups Mixed, behind Italy (gold) and Thailand (silver) in the category that drew 13 countries to the 10th edition of the biennial meet.

The UP students made near-podium finished at the fourth spot in the categories of cheer dance, all-female small group stunts, and mixed team cheer.

Another Philippine team at the Cheerleading World Championships, the Dance Pull School of Performing Arts in Bacolod, won bronze in the Urban Cheer Dance Doubles Category.

The UP Pep Squad had previously won two gold medals at the 2017 edition of the Cheerleading World Championships.

At the 8th CWC held in Berlin in 2015, UP’s cheerleaders won 5 medals.

The UP Pep Squad, in collaboration with the UP Filipiniana Dance Group, also performed excellently and emerged with multiple medals at the 2nd Asian Cheerleading and Dancesport Championship held in Indonesia, the qualifiers to the Cheerleading World Championships (CWC).

The UP Pep Squad holds the record for the most medals won – 8 championships and 20 podium finishes – at the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Cheerdance Competition.

The team recently led the cheers for the epic games of the UP Fighting Maroons Men’s Basketball Team at the UAAP Season 82, including the new UP Fight cheer composed by National Artist for Music, Ryan Cayabyab.
