University of the Philippines High School in Iloilo (UPHSI) professor Jose R. Taton, Jr. and Panay Bukidnon student Rennel Lavilla won the Second Best Presentation award for their research on Bukidnon Subing music.
Taton received the award for his paper entitled “Sonic Transmediatizations in the Transmission, Pedagogy, and Practice of Panay Bukidnon Subing Music” during the 6th Symposium of the International Council for Traditional Music Study Group on Performing Arts of Southeast Asia (ICTM-PASEA) virtually held and hosted by Tainan National University of the Arts in Taiwan from July 29 to August 5, 2021.
Taton’s research “explores the production of different modes of cultural and social mediations – material, practical, aesthetic, visual, and written – in the traditional jaw’s harp practice” among the Panay Bukidnon indigenous communities of Central Panay.
The paper highlights the experiences of young musicians in their formulation of musical solutions that eventually led to a renewed interest in traditional instrument performance, enabling the transmission of endangered sound heritage among indigenous youth.
Professor Taton is currently a candidate for Doctor of Philosophy in Music, major in Ethnomusicology at the Philippine Women’s University.
The ICTM Performing Arts of Southeast Asia Study Group is dedicated to the study and research on music, dance and theatre all throughout Southeast Asia, including Southeast Asian performing arts elsewhere around the world.
UP College of Music (CMu) Class of 2021 graduate Ryle Nicole Quillosa Custodio recently won the top prize in the inaugural Composition Competition of the 2021 Busan Choral Festival & Competition.
Bukidnon’s bamboo musical instruments and Talaandig tribe heritage is being preserved with the help of the Department of Science and Technology Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI).
