The University of the Philippines (UP) and De La Salle University (DLSU) rank among the World’s Top Universities in Environmental and Social Sustainability on the first-ever list released by Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings (QS WUR).
UP and DLSU are among the top 700 environmentally and socially conscious universities to make it on the inaugural QS Sustainability Rankings released on October 26, 2022.
The QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2023 ranked state university UP Diliman in the 401-450 bracket while the Lasallian Brothers-administered DLSU Manila ranked in the 601+ bracket of the ranking that reflects the two universities’ performance when it comes to making positive change for people and the planet.
UP placed 365th while DLSU ranked in the 501+bracket for Environmental Impact Rank based on measures of sustainable institutions, sustainable education, and sustainable research.
UP ranked 405th while DLSU placed 501+ for the Social Impact Rank that measures equality, knowledge exchange, educational impact, employability and opportunities, and quality of life.
The QS WUR Sustainability Ranking is described as a list that “compares the world’s top universities against a range of environmental and social sustainability metrics, to see which institutions are doing the most to tackle the world’s greatest environmental, social and governance (ESG) challenges”.
The two Philippine universities qualified for the Sustainability Rankings by virtue of being among the four local higher education institutions in the 2023 QS WUR and after meeting the minimum level of research connected to sustainability and have been deemed to have a clear, published strategy on climate action.
The list of environmentally and socially conscious universities are designed to focus more on sustainability research impact with a commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and alumni outcomes (if students went on to sustainable career paths), rather than on-campus measures like renewable energy sources and recycling initiatives – demonstrating sustainability outwardly.

QS reveals that national-level data has also been included, covering aspects such as safety and tolerance, clean air and water, and tolerance and freedom.
QS said it intends for the list to help students who want to know if the university and location they are choosing to study in are working towards a sustainable future.
The Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings lists 7 schools from the Philippines.
