University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) professor Kristian Karlo Saguin has won the American Association of Geographers (AAG) Meridian Book Award for his work on Manila and Laguna Lake, “Urban Ecologies on the Edge: Making Manila’s Resource Frontier”.
Saguin was named the recipient of the Outstanding Scholarly Work in Geography award, which recognizes an unusually important contribution to the advancement of science and the art of geography.
The Filipino professor’s winning work was lauded as an “outstanding work of geographical scholarship” that “describes the unequal ways that Laguna Lake functions as a resource frontier and as a living ecology and is enrolled in and transformed by the urban political ecologies of Manila.”
In the book, Saguin writes about Laguna Lake, the largest lake in the Philippines, which supplies Manila’s dense urban region with fish and water while operating as a sink for its stormflows and wastes.
Saguin is an Associate Professor at the Department of Geography, College of Social Sciences and Philosophy at the University of the Philippines Diliman. His work cuts across various socio-ecological questions in urban, agrarian, and environmental studies.
Saguin and the winners of the AAG Awards will be honored in an awards celebration in the United States on March 26, 2023.
