Team Philippines wearing the “Sinag” Barong designed by Francis Libiran proudly stood out among the Best 2024 Paris Olympic Games opening ceremony outfits.
On July 26, Opening Day, American newspaper and broadcasting company USA Today named the Philippine delegation’s official attire one of the best during the first-ever Olympic fluvial Parade of Nations along the historic Seine River in the French capital.
USA Today described Libiran’s creations as “stunning signage barong uniform, a traditional embroidered formal shirt, and the male national dress of the Philippines to celebrate Filipino culture while incorporate (sic) the country’s flag. The barong includes a detachable silk sling with embroidered sun rays and warrior patterns.”
The Philippine Olympic Committee first revealed the Sinag (Sun Rays) Barong to the public on June 19, following the announcement of Pinoy boxing medalists Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam as the country’s flag bearers for the 33rd Olympiad.
“Proudly representing the Philippines at the Paris 2024 Olympics, boxers Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam will carry the Philippine flag in exquisite barong designed by Francis Libiran,” the National Olympic Committee (NOC) stated in their social media post.
“Crafted from piña-jusi fabric and featuring a detachable silk organdy sling with embroidered sun rays and Pintados-inspired warrior patterns, this barong symbolizes bravery and national pride. [Philippine flag and Sparkle emojis],” the Philippines’ NOC added.
“On the detail, every element of the design showcases the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines.”
World-renowned Filipino fashion designer Francis Libiran also shared the inspiration behind his design and creation for the country’s “Centennial Team” now competing at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“Proudly representing the Republic of the Philippines, the ‘SINAG’ barong designed by Francis Libiran shows our brave athletes wearing protective armor shields in vibrant colors of the Philippine Flag, inspired by the tattoo patterns of the majestic Pintados Tribe and the powerful rays of the Sun,” he shared on social media just before the parade of nations started.
“Like the Pintados, our Filipino athletes are brave heroes ready for battle, proudly raising our flag on the global arena. Resilient like the sun, Filipinos rise and shine despite life’s challenges,” Libiran went on.
“Today, as we celebrate our 100th year participating in the Olympics, Team Philippines is ready to fight and conquer the world at the Olympic Games Paris 2024! Mabuhay ang Atletang Pilipino! Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!” he concluded.
