Filipino world boxing champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao continues to make good on his mission to support boxing in Asia and has made a surprise move to bring his next ring fight to Malaysia.
The 8-division champion, who was honored as the 2015 Asia Game Changer of the Year as he is “a remarkable inspiration and demonstrates the power of giving back to transform people’s lives,” is scheduled to fight for the World Welterweight Championship against Argentinian Lucas Matthysse on July 15 in Kuala Lumpur.
Inquirer reported that Pacquiao revealed “one of the major reasons why he opted to fight in Kuala Lumpur is to promote boxing in the Asian region.”
At his open workout session at Le Meridien Hotel before the fight Pacquiao announced “We’re going to donate the equipment and the ring here in Kuala Lumpur for the sport” – referring to the makeshift boxing gym built for the two boxing champions.
The Pacquiao and Matthysse match has been dubbed “Fight of the Champions” and will be held at the Axiata Arena and telecast globally on various sports channels.
