Mondelēz Philippines has reported it has gained sustainability milestones in the plastic packaging of its popular snacking products.

Mondelēz International reported that the company has met its commitment to collect and divert the equivalent volumes of post-consumer plastic packaging used in the Philippines in 2023.

The company, renowned for brands like Oreo, Toblerone, Cadbury Dairy Milk, Tang, Eden Cheese, Cheez Whiz, and Tiger Biscuits, reported brands like Oreo Mini and Chips Ahoy in Southeast Asia redesigned packaging and eliminated plastic trays for some products.

The move aligns with the local Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Law which mandates companies to manage the plastic they utilize.

In its 2023 global ESG report, Snacking Made Right, Mondelēz International enumerated the following:

  • By 2025, the company aims to make 98% of its packaging recyclable, up from its 2023 achievement of 96% of its packaging worldwide designed to be recyclable.
  • The company also aims for 5% of its plastic packaging to be made from recycled content, reducing virgin plastic packaging.
  • In the Philippines, the company partners with Plastic Credit Exchange (PCX) to recover and divert the equivalent in-market yearly plastic packaging output for 2023 and 2024. The collected plastic is recycled into flakes and upcycled into building materials, among others.
  • The Mondelēz-PCX partnership supports the Aling Tindera program, providing a livelihood for sari-sari store owners who serve as plastic collection sites.
  • Mondelēz International invests in Circulate Capital in Southeast Asia and India, focusing on the collection of flexible films—lightweight, multi-layer plastics used by the snacking industry. In 2023, Circulate Capital helped the company prevent 4,201 metric tons of plastic pollution across Southeast Asia and India, also reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Mondelez Philippines has been known for strengthening its commitment to diversity and inclusion. The company has been a finalist for the World Vision CSR Company of the Year at the Asia CEO Awards.
