Meet Bayang Barrios, Noel Cabangon, and Myke Salomon – three of the lead stars on the longest-running hit jukebox Filipino musical, Rak of Aegis.
The 7th season of Rak of Aegis, staged in collaboration with the Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit (OPM), celebrates Original Pilipino Music and Filipino talent on the stage of the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) Theater in Quezon City.
The musical that exhibits Pinoy resourcefulness and resilience in its production aspects: writing, stage design, power-belting performances, and the transformed songs of iconic band, Aegis, is nearing its 400-shows-mark with its 2019 season.
The show’s musical director, beat-boxer Myke Salomon also performs as Kenny, the romantic interest of Aileen. Salomon is a prolific music-maker who, prior to the new season of Rak of Aegis, wrapped up the Newport Performing Arts Theater’s staging of “Ang Huling El Bimbo” musical based on the Eraserheads’ songs. Salomon also had a stint with National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab in the Sana Naman Taumbayan unity song independent release.
Noel Cabangon, a singer-songwriter and OPM advocate who broke into the Philippine mainstream music scene via the alternative hit “Kanlungan”, essays the role of Aileen’s father, Kiel. Cabangon comfortably belts the Aegis songs as he returns to musical theater after a 12-year absence.
Lumad rights advocate Bayang Barrios also debuted on the Rak of Aegis stage this season as kapitana Mary Jane, the mother of Kenny who had a previous romance with Kiel. Barrios had just finished her run on the Cultural Center of the Philippines stage as the Musa in Tanghalang Pilipino’s 32nd Theater Season Opener of Balag at Angud, a musical about the life of protest artist, Junyee. Barrios was also in the collaborative unity song project, Sana Naman Taumbayan.
The three Filipino musicians from different genres electrify the Rak of Aegis stage in their solos, duets, and group performances at the PETA Theater in New Manila.
In interviews with Good News Pilipinas! TV anchor Trixie Esguerra, the three Filipino music artists reveal their views about performing on Rak of Aegis and their pride in being Filipino.
