Zamboanga City Mayor Maria Isabelle “Beng” Climaco is being awarded the 2018 World Mayor Prize World Mayor Commendation for her achievements as a female mayor and role model for career and young women, and men.
Mayor Climaco made it to the Top 5 World’s Best Mayors list of the London-based City Mayors Foundation “in recognition of her services to local government and for her commitment to provide Zamboanga citizens with harmony, security and prosperity.” The World Mayors named the Mayor of Ancona, Italy as the winner of the 2018 World Mayor Prize with Commendations for the Mayors of Doncaster (UK), Rennes (France), Saarbrücken (Germany), and Zamboanga City (Philippines).
The World Mayor Project describes Mayor Climaco’s achievements:
During her first term in office Mayor Climaco made it her priority for the victims of the Zamboanga siege in 2013 – where nearly 200 people died and over 120,000 residents were displaced – to receive justice and compensation.
She has also been determined to heal any divisions between the city’s Christian and Muslim communities. The Inter-Religious Dialogue Council, she convened, has been successful in promoting peace.
In a city, which was often perceived as violent, there have been no bombing or kidnapping incidents since 2016. In 2017, Mayor Climaco’s administration won the award for the most improved local government.
