De La Salle University – Dasmarinas (DLSU-D) Lasallian Pointes N’ Flexes Dance Company (LPNFDC) members and alumni are currently conducting online Zumba classes, workout sessions and dance classes for Filipinos facing adversities during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The fundraising event “Move as One for Every Juan” aims to raise funds to aid the poor urban communities affected by the lockdown to stop the spread of COVID-19.
The DLSU-D-based modern dance company launched the COVID-19 relief project last April 23, 2020, on their Facebook page. The classes are conducted by their members, alumni, and Zumba instructors.
Good News Pilipinas interviewed Nicolei Marcelo, one of the project heads, to give an overview of the project.
“This is a fundraising activity which helps the poorer urban communities that are most affected by the pandemic. Our organization is conducting a session of online classes that focus on Zumba fitness, workout routines, and dance or choreography classes to offer to people in quarantine who wish to work out, stay fit and explore other dance genres in the comfort of their homes,” Marcelo shared.
The Lasallian dance company has invited different professionals or well-known teachers and choreographers in the dance community to help them conduct online classes.
“So far, we have successfully accomplished the first three days of our fundraising event and somehow we managed to increase our engagements from social media users. Donations are also coming in at a steady pace but we wish to connect with more people that would help us promote our event to reach more audience,” Marcelo added.
Lasallian Pointes N’ Flexes Dance Company also shared that the DLSU-D dance company partnered with Be the Juan Ph Organization to develop their fundraising drive for less privileged communities through a series of online sessions.
“In terms of funds, we have raised over 10,000 pesos in the first 3 days of our online classes,” Marcelo said.
The Fundraiser is running from April 25- April 30 every 1:00pm, 4:00pm and 7:00pm.
Other FB Online class initiatives include the champion dance crew UPeepz with their free 15-minute online dance classes on Facebook to raise funds for personal protective equipment (PPE) of frontliners in various hospitals.
Fil-Am teen basketball trainer Ryan Ang added the Gatorade Bottle Challenge to his free online training for athletes to help raise funds for COVID-19 relief.
De La Salle University – Dasmarinas (DLSU-D) Senior High School students previously came up with a solution to plastic waste problems by developing an alternative to plastic drinking straw using the Filipino favorite Saba banana’s fruit peelings as well as an electricity-generating pedestrian crossing and shoes as their ecology-friendly school projects.
