The Intramuros Administration, the government agency whose mandate is to preserve and develop Manila’s historical walled city, is celebrating its 41st year anniversary.
Started in 1979 following Presidential Decree No. 1616, the Intramuros Administration played a vital role in giving life to the Spanish colonial settlement damaged by fire and war.
Now, Intramuros is flourishing with life as it serves as the prime tourist destination in the National Capital Region.
The walled city, which was previously known as the Manila during the Spanish colonial era, houses historical sites, universities, churches including the Manila Cathedral, museums, government and business offices, art galleries, shops, and cafes.
Despite the on-going enhanced community quarantine to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19, the Intramuros Administration goes online to celebrate its 41 years of achievement by featuring “personalities/entities that have been influential in the history and development of Intramuros”.
The introduction of the video series has been posted on Intramuros Administration’s Facebook page with a link that would lead the readers to its playlist.
As of this writing, tribute videos for Seafarers and the Guardia of Ciudad Murada have been published on social media.
The government agency received the 2015 “Patrimonio” or Heritage Award from Association of Heritage Cities of Spain for its efforts to preserve and protect Spanish colonial architecture.
In 2018, Intramuros Administration and the Department of Tourism welcomed about 1 million local and foreign tourists after the former announced the opening of 7 churches inside the Spanish-era fortress of Manila.
The 7 churches in 2018 became 9 churches for the traditional Visita Iglesia in 2019 as the Intramuros Administration aimed to make the walled city into a center of pilgrims and Catholic faith in Asia.
Visitors can also enjoy the Intramuros through GrabWheels eScooters after the Department of Tourism inked a deal with transport company GRAB to allow tourists to roam around the historic walled city of Manila on two-wheel personal mobility devices.
Prior to the lockdown, with the growing number of tourists flocking to the walled city, Intramuros Administration and the Department of Tourism launched the Intramuros night tours for those who want a different thrill and experience.
