Rico Hizon, a name synonymous with excellence in international journalism, wasn’t always the confident broadcaster we see today. His transformation from a child with a speech impediment to a celebrated television journalist with 36 years of experience is nothing short of remarkable.
In an exclusive interview with Korina Sanchez on Net 25’s Korina Interviews, Hizon shared the inspiring story of his journey from being a Philippine media worker to delivering global news, returning home to join CNN Philippines, and his new role in the corporate world while continuing his advocacy for good news stories that build up Filipino Pride.

A Shaky Start: Overcoming Insecurities
Rico Hizon’s early life was marked by insecurities, particularly when comparing himself to his high-achieving siblings.
“They were so good. They would always get 95… 100, and they were always top 5 in their batch. As for me… I would only be top 50, top 80 in my batch,” Hizon recalled.
Despite this, he found comfort and discovered his unique talent in public speaking and declamation contests, even winning the gold medal for showcasing his rendition of Carlos P. Romulo’s speech, “I am a Filipino.”

Choosing a Path: Public Speaking Over Singing
Hizon’s journey wasn’t straightforward. Initially, he harbored dreams of becoming a singer like his friends, OPM icons Gary Valenciano and Martin Nievera, and even auditioned for the renowned Kundirana.
However, a pivotal moment came when he was also invited to join the Forensics Guild, a public speaking and debating club.
“I think I made the right choice,” he said. This decision set the stage for his future in journalism.

The First Big Break: From Fast Food to Fast News
Working in fast food during high school taught Hizon the value of hard work and financial independence. He also made money as a DJ with classmate David Celdran.
“What my parents really wanted is to really work hard for the money that you earn,” he explained.
These lessons carried over into his early journalism career, where he started from the bottom, writing scripts and even serving coffee before making his on-air debut.
His first major break came during a storm in 1991 when he had to substitute for Business Today host Atty. Dong Puno who could not get to the studio because of the flooded streets.
“Because of a storm, GMA discovered him. He became a news anchor,” Sanchez recounted. This unexpected opportunity allowed Rico to showcase his skills and led to a significant career milestone.

Going Global: Making Waves Internationally
Hizon’s ambition didn’t stop at national news. He aspired to represent Filipinos on the global stage. After sending his video resume to NBC News, he was hired by CNBC Asia and later moved to Singapore when CNBC merged with Dow Jones and Asia Business News. Rico recalls being told they wanted his neutral English “Pan-Asian” accent.
“I want to trailblaze for Filipinos. For future Filipinos who would also like to be news anchors,” he said.

His journey took him to BBC World News, where he spent 18 years delivering news from Singapore and occasionally from the London headquarters.
“You have to take a chance. You have to take the risk,” Hizon emphasized. His willingness to step out of his comfort zone and seize opportunities paved the way for an illustrious career.
