American Idol (AI) fan-favorite Francisco Martin met his rumored rival, decided to join up for the duets challenge, and the resulting performance earned them a pass to move on to the next round.
“Move over One Direction!” posted AI on the duo’s Facebook performance video while the show’s Instagram captioned their photos and videos with, “Name this future boy band…”
“Young charmers Louis Knight and Francisco Martin set the rivalry rumors straight,” said AI in its caption for the AI YouTube video.
Martin first met Louis Knight in the Singer-Songwriter genre challenge, where the Filipino singer received a standing ovation, and apparently hit it off well so they decided to face the duets challenge together.
AI showed videos of the two young musicians chatting and rehearsing together, with Knight encouraging the Filipino-American singer from San Francisco who has been experiencing the nerves on the American Idol stage.
The duet performance of “Breakeven” by The Script on March 22 (U.S. Time) earned praises for Knight and encouragement from the judges for Martin who forgot some lyrics.
After the performance, judge Katy Perry tells Francisco “Don’t give up. Don’t show defeat. You can go backstage and kick a trash can if you need to. But don’t let the audience know.”
“We have tremendous hopes and dreams for you guys. You need to trust us and the people around you that you’re this good. Because you are,” adds judge Luke Bryan who declared Francisco Martin a winner during the February auditions.
Lionel Richie had the best encouragement for Francisco who admitted he did not have enough confidence in himself: “Just put this though to your head: You were born enough, there’s nothing you have to prove except to yourself!”
The announcement of the judges’ decision was suspenseful as judge Katy Perry said, “We have high hopes for both of you. But only one of you will win.”
And then Perry declared both as moving on to the next round.
American Idol airs on Sundays and Mondays on ABC.
