Young Filipino mathematicians have brought home a massive haul of 635 honors from the Singapore & Asian Schools Math Olympiad (SASMO) 2024, showcasing their excellence in one of Asia’s largest math competitions.

This year’s Team Philippines led by the Asian MathSci League Inc. (AMSLI), earned a total of 109 Gold, 149 Silver, 257 Bronze, and 120 Honorable Mentions, improving on last year’s tally of 430 awards.

A total of 574 participants received SASMO 2024 Certificates of Participation, citations which AMSLI says are “further underscoring the widespread enthusiasm for mathematics among Filipino students.”

The Filipino math students were among 57,060 participants from grades 1 to 12, representing 7,333 schools across 38 countries. The 19th edition of SASMO, held on April 6, featured onsite and online modalities synchronized with other participating Asian countries. SASMO published official results on May 13.

AMSLI President Rechilda Villame praised the remarkable performance of Filipino students, saying, “The outstanding achievements of Filipino participants in this year’s SASMO reflect their exceptional talent and dedication to mathematics. We are immensely proud of their accomplishments and commend their hard work and perseverance.”

SASMO organizers announced that medal winners are qualified to compete at the Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC) scheduled for July 2024.

AMSLI also shared that Gold and Silver medalists from the Philippines have earned the right to represent the country at the International Junior Math Olympiad (IJMO) in December in Turkey. Team Philippines was awarded Overall Champion in the 2022 IJMO.
