The four Filipino-Canadians of Team Baisas bested other international competitors to win the first prize in the International Snow-Sculpting Competition held as part of Snow Days Festival in Banff, Alberta in Canada held from January 17-19, 2019.
Team Baisas composed of couples Ross and Marites Baisas, and Antonio and Maria Elena Baisas, won both the first place (judges’ pick) and the People’s Choice Award for their snow sculpture called “Tangle,” an image of two moose with inter-locking antlers.
Ross and Antonio Baisas who now live Canada with their respective wives are natives of Paete, Laguna – known to be the “Wood Carving Capital of the Philippines.” Another Paete native, Rogel Cabisidan, also recently won a sculpting competition using ice in France.
The Baisas brothers are set to compete in another ice-sculpting competition called the Boardwalk Ice on Whyte in Edmonton, Alberta on January 24 to 27, January 31 to February 3.
