De La Salle University (DLSU) students recently achieved a remarkable feat by winning the Outstanding Delegation Gold Award, Outstanding Delegate, and three Outstanding Position Paper awards at the prestigious National Model United Nations (NMUN) Conference in New York.
DLSU Manila’s five awards were achieved as the Philippine team represented New Zealand in the diplomacy competition that showcases the students’ skills and knowledge in negotiation and international relations between countries.
DLSU Manila successfully participated at the NMUN New York 2023 conference attended by 3,900 delegates and faculty from 225 universities and colleges across 37 countries, which took place at the New York Hilton Midtown from April 10-14. The awarding ceremony was held on the final day at the General Assembly (GA) Hall of the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The 14-member DLSU team, led by head delegates Josue Marie Venida and Ana Maria Isabel Lirios, was divided into eight UN committees representing New Zealand. The team and several team members received individual accolades, including:
- DLSU Manila, Outstanding Delegation
- Michael Anthony Go as Outstanding Delegate in the ECOSOC Committee
- Ishan Chugani with an Outstanding Position Paper Award in the General Assembly Committee 2
- Ana Maria Isabel Lirios with an Outstanding Position Paper Award in the General Assembly Committee 3
- Hyacinth Flores with an Outstanding Position Paper Award in the UNHCR Committee
The training team in the Philippines included Gaye Justinia Delos Santos, Yedda Bueno, Arrabela Lumanglas, Julean Palpallatoc, and Xybastian Trinidad. Department of Political Science and Development Studies faculty member Allen Surla served as the team’s adviser.
The NMUN Secretariat grants awards in recognition of exceptional performance by delegations across all committees and their extensive conference preparation. Overall Delegation Awards (Outstanding, Distinguished, and Honorable Mention) are based on work at NMUN, while Outstanding Position Paper Awards and Outstanding Delegates in Committee Awards are given for pre-conference preparation and delegate votes in each committee, respectively.
DLSU’s impressive track record at NMUN since 2014 includes five Outstanding Delegation Awards (Gold), three Distinguished Delegation Awards (Silver), and six Honorable Mention Awards (Bronze).
As the world’s largest simulation of Model United Nations, NMUN allows university students from around the globe to step into the roles of diplomats and propose resolutions addressing critical issues such as disarmament, regional conflicts, peacekeeping, human rights, women and children, economic and social development, and the environment.
DLSU actively participates in Model United Nations (MUN) simulations beyond those hosted by NMUN, the oldest US-based and UN-accredited organization. In an effort to promote MUN awareness in the Philippines and abroad, DLSU has hosted international Model United Nations conferences. For the ninth consecutive year, DLSU will hold the De La Salle Model United Nations Conference at the Manila campus this coming June.
DLSU is the Philippines’ leader in business and economics education and has been named among the world’s top environmentally and socially conscious universities.
