The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Land Transportaion and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) announced the release of newly-fitted Cebu transport vehicles coinciding with the July 11 nationwide launch of the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP).
Office of the Presidential Assistant for Visayas (OPAV) Secretary Michael Dino said that the launch marks the start of the golden age of Cebu’s transportation system.
The LTFRB issued certificates of public conveyance or permits to operate to the modern PUVs on the same day.
According to OPAV, there are 510 Modern PUV units in Cebu comprised of 110 hybrid buses, 300 modern taxis, and 100 e-jeepneys which will be fully fitted with the high tech gadgets by June 2020.
With an aim to provide safety, comfort, and convenience to the commuting public, LTFRB equipped the buses with GPS, WiFi, CCTVs, USB slots for mobile phone charging, washrooms, overhead baggage compartment, and karaoke for entertainment purposes.
The modern jeepneys are powered by solar panels and are equipped with WiFi, USB slots for mobile phone charging, television, and electric fans.
Taxicabs are also equipped with WiFi and CCTVs, are fully-airconditioned and have wide leg room.
The modern PUV passengers also have the choice to pay the fare in cash or through Automated Fare Collection (AFC) system using beep cards.
The modern PUVs also have a low to zero maintenance cost and are Euro-4 compliant for fuel-efficiency. The emission is ten times cleaner than old engines.
Cebu’s modern Public Utility Buses (PUB) have routes from Cebu South Bus Terminal to Cebu Business Park, IT Park, Mandaue City, and Marigondon in Lapu-Lapu City. The other routes are from the Cebu South Bus Terminal to Danao City in Northern Cebu and from Cebu City to Sibonga town, for Northern and Southern Cebu, respectively.
Meanwhile, the modern Public Utility Jeepneys (PUJ) can be found in Lapu-Lapu City and Cordova town.
