Cagayan charity worker, Herson Raquinio, is a finalist in the 2020 Volunteer Movement Award given by the Social Welfare Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government.
The Hong Kong body recognizes outstanding individual and group volunteers in serving the community.
The Cagayan native is being lauded for his work with indigenous kids, the Project Lapis or Literacy Assistance Program for Indigenous Student that distributes school materials to children in far-flung areas. The effort recently reached out to a remote barangay in Gattaran, Cagayan on August 19, 2020.
Raquinio’s initiative soldiered on amid the pandemic, providing school supplies and snacks to 130 indigenous children in the immersion activity. The non-profit group aided native Agta children last year.
Project Lapis also won for Raquinio the bronze award for the 2019 individual volunteer award. He announced his new nomination for the same project on August 22.
Raquinio dedicated the nomination to the indigenous people he works with and thanked everyone for the overwhelming support he had been receiving.

More Filipinos are stepping up with unique and selfless acts of volunteerism despite the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Already in the frontlines against the virus, overseas Filipino nurse Aldrin Licayan found the time to raise money for distance learning gadgets to be donated to Pinoy kids back home.
Batangas’ Casa Antonio Glamp Camp is giving away free wifi kits to distance learners in the province.
These student-led campaigns are also making sure that no learner is left behind amid the new normal schooling.
