The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) and the UnitedHealth Group Research & Development (UHG R&D) will collaborate to help train young data scientists who will mine the two firms’ rich trove of data for useful and profitable insights on products, clients, and processes.
Through a memorandum of understanding, BPI and UHG, the largest health care company in the world will roll out the BPI-UHG R&D Data Science Program (BUDS Program), to create a data science powerhouse in the country where young data scientists develop the skills to handle huge amounts of data for better decision-making.
“Every minute, we collect a huge amount of data from our clients and operations. As part of our digital transformation, we will hire these data scientists and make use of advance analytics to optimize the data and come up with smarter decisions,” said BPI Chief Operating Officer Ramon Jocson.
“We are after the best and the brightest minds in the country to work on world-class problems. We feel the Philippines has the talent base to be globally competitive,” said UHG R&D’s Head of Asia Pacific Patrick Reyes.
The collaboration centers on providing data science and analytics training for individuals who lean towards pursuing a data science career with strong mathematical background, particularly graduates of math, statistics, physics, engineering, and computer science courses.
The BUDS Program will feature lectures on unique field perspectives and first-hand data science ecosystem experience from industry luminaries, including UHG’s Training Director Andrew Teasdale, Research Fellow Greg Lyng, and Data Scientists Eloisa Ventura and Reina Reyes.
The trainees under the BUDS Program will receive a competitive salary and allowances during the 12-month training. Successful passers of the program will likewise have the opportunity to be hired by BPI and UHG R&D to join their respective data science teams. The first batch is expected to commence on July 1, 2019.
Candidates should be in their final year of obtaining their degrees, or must have obtained their degree within the last 12 months. Other degrees will be considered when accompanied by an aptitude in Statistics, Linear Algebra, and Multivariable Calculus, as well as a serious interest in data science.
