Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) is giving all students Pass (P) marks and will refund lab and dorm fees, as the Loyola school’s act of compassion at this time of suspended classes during the community quarantine.
The second semester of schoolyear 2019-2020 is supposed to end on May 8. However, Metro Manila has been on lockdown since March 12 and the quarantine period has just been extended to April 30, 2020.
The ADMU Office of the Vice President memo dated April 6 was shared by the school’s student paper, The Guidon, on their Facebook and Twitter.
ADMU Office of the Vice President stated in the memo that giving students a passing mark “is the most humane way of dealing with student grades under the circumstances that we are in. It is difficult and unfair to make a judgement of failure considering that students have not been given the benefit of a full semester to improve their performance.”
Non-graduating students without WP marks will get a “P” (Pass mark) in all their courses and will automatically be promoted to the next level.
Graduating students have the option to request letter grades in the 2nd semester “under certain conditions”. If no request is made they will get Pass marks in all their courses. The graduating students will be cleared to graduate under the conditions the schools have set for them.
Aside from getting a passing grade students will also get a refund of Php20,000 from their tuition fees and a 60% refund from their lab fees. Students with scholarships will also get a refund on a pro-rated basis.
On Wednesday, April 8, the Ateneo Residence Halls issued a memo on lodging fee refunds. LS dormers who have fully or partially paid their 2nd-semester lodging fee but have discontinued their stay due to the lockdown would get a 50% refund.
The Pass Mark was also given out to students in various schools during the EDSA People Power in 1986, with Filipinos stirring across the nation as the world was abuzz at it watched the developing story that was tagged as “the Philippines teaching the world what is democracy”.
Ateneo de Manila University holds the distinction of being the very first Philippine university to join the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development Virtual Institute (UNCTAD Vi).
Ateneo de Manila University World Ranking was in the 651-700 bracket, By Subject Ranking at 151-200, Asian University Rankings at 115, and Graduate Employability Ranking at 181-190 on the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings for 2019.
