Mapúa University has taken a major step toward addressing the global climate crisis by launching the Philippines’ first-ever undergraduate program in Energy Engineering.
This new three-term program equips students with the knowledge and skills to innovate sustainable energy solutions. From solar and wind power to smart grids and energy storage systems, the course prepares future engineers to tackle environmental challenges with science-based practices.
Among the pioneer batch is Felix L. Merin, a 20-year-old student from Las Piñas, whose passion for energy solutions began in ninth grade. Initially considering mechanical engineering, Felix switched tracks when he discovered Mapúa offered energy engineering during his enrollment.
“Energy has become a pseudo necessity, and we consume so much of it daily. We get our power from various sources albeit fossil fuel dominated. As a future energy engineer, we must find a way to provide clean and cheaper energy to the community consistently,” Felix shared.
Now in his second year, Felix is planning a research project that explores the feasibility of the Philippines transitioning to a renewable energy-based system. His goal is to identify what motivates communities to move away from fossil fuels.
Felix also plans to form a student organization for energy engineering students to collaborate, study, and support one another.
“The program enables aspiring energy solutionaries to master and maximize the concepts and ideas to devise future innovations,” he said. “Aspiring energy experts should be open-minded and develop empathy to truly become great climate solutionaries.”
The demand for energy engineers is also on the rise. With support from private sector leaders like the Yuchengco Group of Companies, Ayala, and the Lopez Group, the renewable energy industry in the Philippines is expected to create over 350,000 jobs by 2030, according to the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis.
Mapúa’s pioneering program is not just shaping careers—it is helping build a more sustainable future.
