Filipino-American Grandmaster Wesley So has successfully reclaimed the United States Chess Championship title, emerging as the top player in the 12-man Grandmaster event.
So first won the US Chess Champion title in 2017 and reclaimed the same crown at the 2020 US Chess Championship held on October 29, 2020 (October 30, Philippine time).
So went on social media to thank his supporters. He also had a message for the world: “Winning the US Championships for the second time is a gift at the end of a very long hard year. I know most people in the world are suffering in different ways and my prayer is that God would give you something special to help through the hard times just as He has done for me today.”
The top chess player who started his career in the Philippines swept the US tourney scoring 9 points in 7 wins against the following:
- Alex Lenderman
- Alejandro Ramirez
- Awonder Liang
- Sam Shankland
- Dariusz Swiercz
- Elshan Moradiabadi
- Jeffery Xiong
The 27-year-old So had 4 draws:
- Ray Robson
- Lenier Dominguez
- Sam Sevian
- Hikaru Nakamura
The US title came with a cash prize of $40,000 (Php2 million).
In September, Wesley So shared the world title with Magnus Carlsen at the Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz.
Wesley So also won the 1st United States Clutch Chess Champions Showdown.
