University of Santo Tomas (UST) students have launched the Streets to Schools donation drive for gadgets to help school children with the distance learning mode that is being implemented in the new academic year.
Streets to Schools launched on June 18, 2020, the donation drive for old and new laptops, tablets, or other gadgets, and school supplies that will be given to school children who need the devices amidst the “new normal” classes beginning August 2020.
DepEd announced the new modes of learning and teaching that will use virtual platforms including internet, television, and radio.
However, not every student owns a gadget to use these platforms, and buying one is not easy during this time. The Streets to Schools drive is addressing this need with its initial target to gather 300 pre-loved gadgets to give to those struggling students.
If you are interested in donating, reach out to Streets to Schools by sending them a message on Facebook here.
Streets to Schools is an organization started by three students, namely, Qjiel Mariano, Alianza Salvador, Anthea Terrenal, from the UST Junior High School with their adviser Caesar Anthony E. Yoma through the Young Bridging Leaders program. This program empowers young leaders aged 12-15 to mobilize projects related to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in their local community.
They started with the “Out of the Streets and into the School” project, which helped street children around UST. When they saw that it was sustainable, they upscaled into the organization Streets to Schools and has since been active in its mission to improve education in the whole Philippines.
Other initiatives to help students during this challenging time of distance learning include Heart Evangelista’s giving out tablets to school children and the UP Open University’s offer to teach English and Math for free.
SEND CHEERS to the brilliant young students of UST for their advocacy and for taking the initiative to gather gadgets to help students cope with distance learning.
