The Araw ng Maynila celebrations on Wednesday are dedicated to honoring COVID 19 frontliners of the Philippines’ capital city.
The special non-working holiday on June 24, 2020, marking Manila’s 449th Founding Anniversary will feature events that honor those who are leading the fight against the coronavirus disease.
Manila Mayor Isko Moreno wrote in his Manila Bulletin column, “The city government will fete our frontliners, who are our modern-day heroes and dedicate the special day for all of them.”
Manila’s leader identified these frontliners to include doctors, nurses, hospital staff, other health personnel, police and barangay authorities, and the heads and staff of the city government’s various offices, bureaus, and departments.
Moreno stated that “no amount of money or words can compensate for the dedication of the frontliners, they are deserving of great recognition along with the donors who have kept the city government afloat.”
The schedule of activities includes a groundbreaking ceremony for the Bagong Ospital ng Manila, a 10-storey project with 384-bed capacity, essential facilities, and a helipad. The new hospital will be located beside the current hospital, with the former one to be converted into the College of Medicine building for Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM).
Interactions with the frontliners are scheduled as a Zoom meeting and a tribute to frontliners via Facebook Live. The tribute is focused on the bravery of the frontliners, said Department of Tourism, Culture, and Arts of Manila chief Charlie Dungo.
At 6:30 pm, historical buildings in the city such as Fort Santiago and the National Museum will be simultaneously lit.
Most of the events are held online and offline events will follow health safety protocols.
